Professional Practice

So I’m finally working at an actual office, with a 7 hour work schedule and I’ve already done some things I’ve been asked to do. Not incredibly much, but it’s fun seeing stuff you make actually get printed and given out to a client (even if I didn’t see that last part happen). So far I’ve been helping out with graphic work, since these guys don’t actually offer webpages (since they don’t have a webpage designer) but I am supposed to be working on their own webpage once we get control over it (since right now they don’t even have ftp access to it). I hope the server it’s on has php and mysql support, or else I’ll have to do a crash course on aspx and database handling for that language. I do have some knowledge of asp so that should help some, but since I haven’t used it for over a year, I have a lot of brushing up to do.

First day was really relaxed, I spent all day basically exchanging comments with their graphics designer, talking bout webpages, stuff I can do with what I know, about blogs, their uses and all that fun stuff. I also showed him Illustrator, since he wasn’t familiarized with it, as well as how ot download stuff using bittorrent and Azureus.

Second day I was alone, and they asked me a few things, about email surveys, and then I spent most of my work hours working on the cover for a dvd box and the cd top. That got printed and ready by the time I could leave for the day.

Today’s my third day, and the morning was pretty boring, since I didn’t have anything to do (thus I started writing this). I just got asked ot print a cd top that was already done (and I made a mistake and had to print a second copy), and that was about it. It’s kinda wierd when I don’t have anything to do, beause I feel bad just staring at the screen, and I also feel bad if I seem to be idling on something even remotely like a game, since the office is open and anyone can see what I’m doing. Thus I opted for writing emails and posting in my blog, that look at least remotely close to ‘work’.

Oh yeah, I also designed the stickers for their new van, but that didn’t take more than an hour of the 4 I have in the morning. I’m not totally satisfied with the results of my editing, but I tried to make it look like the other vehicles they already have with stickers on them, and I made two versions so they could compare. Still have to present that, but I kinda feel nervous as to how they’ll react to what I did x.x Given, the work I did yesterday was approved.

I’m always a bit apprehensive about my work not being good enough for commercial standards.
