Thumb Thing Book Holder

January 26th, 2006 by Hikaru

Adding boingboing.net to my rss has been really fun, sine htey have so many articles about fun stuff, I’d wanna post about all of them. Instead I give you the link and let you investigate on your own.

The Thumb Thing

I do wanna comment on one thingy I found that would definetly be a great gift for me XD It’s the Thumb Thing, a small plastic device to help keep a book open with one thumb. I read so much, and I have always had the problem of keeping the book open, specially in windy weather, or when walking, eating or even typing! This little gadget looks like something I’d LOVE to have X3

Novus Ordo Seclorum

January 15th, 2006 by Hikaru

Novus Ordo Seclorum on the seal of USAIt all started when I saw ORDO on the nick of a friend on msn. I remembered the book, Criptonomicon by Neal Stephenson that I read just last year. it was a really fun read, with lots of mystery and real history from WW2.

I ended up finding a very interesting page called ‘What’s up with Enoch Root?‘. If you’ve read the book, go read that page, you’ll probably find it just as interesting… and made me really want to read Quicksilver, a prequel to Cryptonomicon, in which Enoch Root appears to be a charater. And after reading Neal’s entry in Wikipedia, I definetly feel interested in reading all his books, since I definetly enjoyed his style of writing and the topics he touches in his novels.

For those of you, like me, that read the spanish version, this page has some interesting info from the peron who did the transltion of the book.

My googling also produced this page with a detailed essay on the Solitaire encryption system used in the book, as well as versions of a program for it in different languages, that I know some of you (or one of you) might be interested in checking out.

Google’s at it again

January 11th, 2006 by Hikaru

I’ve been reading the news rss from Computer Weekly these past few days, and an interesting piece appeared yesterday about Google. Apparently to further their market area into the desktop buisness, Google is now offering a program pack for people to install into their computers.

Here’s a list of the programs that you can install with this download:

  • Google Earth - 3D Earth browser - 10MB
  • Google Desktop - Desktop companion - 726K
  • Picasa - Photo organizer - 3.3MB
  • Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer - Search toolbar - 550K
  • Google Pack Screensaver - Photo screensaver - 670K
  • Google Talk - Voice and IM application - 819K

Additional Software

  • Mozilla Firefox with Google Toolbar - Web browser - 4.8MB
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal - Antispyware utility - 2.9MB
  • Norton AntiVirus 2005 Special Edition - Antivirus utility - 21.9MB (6 months free)
  • Adobe Reader 7 - PDF reader - 20MB
  • RealPlayer - Media player - 10.8MB
  • GalleryPlayer HD Images - Images - 10MB
  • Trillian - Instant messenger - 9.2MB

Before downloading you can personalize the programs you want to install, so it’s not neccesary to download them all if you aren’t going to use them. It’s still not close enough to what I install on my on computer after rebooting the harddrive, but it does seem like a nice starter pack for people unfamiliar with what they should install. And I definetly like the Firefox bit. I think they should include Spybot too though.

Planarity

January 10th, 2006 by Hikaru

A fun little flash game I just found, I played the first 4 levels only because I’m a bit late for work, check it out and I’m sure you’ll find it quite fun! They say lvl 8’s already difficult, I can see that game getting real complicated, real quick.

Planarity

It’s all about getting the vertices not to overlap.
